Overview:

CHES and CSA are collaborating to bring an exciting post-conference workshop to the attendees at the CHES 2014 Conference in Saint John, NB.  This workshop will help attendees develop plans to ensure their healthcare buildings are operating as safely and efficiently as possible. Proper operation and maintenance of a health care facility is essential to the safety of patients, visitors and personnel and to ensure effective use of limited healthcare financial resources. For maximum safety, efficiency and effectiveness, operation & maintenance (O&M) functions should be managed by trained and qualified personnel using a well-organized and documented system. CSA Z8002-14 Operation and Maintenance of Health Care Facilities provides essential requirements and establishes a framework for O&M procedures.

Federal bill C-45, the legislation that amended the Canadian Criminal Code in March of 2004. establishes legal duties for workplace health and safety, and imposes serious penalties for violations that result in injuries or death. Bill C-45 makes it possible to prosecute a hospital and its directors, officers, physicians and employees for criminal negligence, where a person suffers bodily harm or death relating to circumstances where the hospital and person(s) knew or ought to have known that there was a danger to a patient, visitor or staff member and they “showed wanton and reckless disregard” for the person’s safety.

This one-day workshop will feature a detailed introduction to the CSA Z8002-14 standard in the morning, followed by practical application of this standard in combination with other well-known healthcare facilities standards.  We will explore:

1. Plumbing – Apply the CSA Z8002 standard to not only ensure compliance with CSA Z317.1 but also build the foundation to be in compliance with the proposed ASHRAE standard 188P to reduce the risks of legionella growth in building water systems.

2. Medical Gas - Look at real world applications of the Medical Gas standard CSA Z7396.1 and how to apply it in your facility.  We will look at the new Medical Gas Personnel Certification and the need for an identified qualified person in every healthcare building.

3. HVAC – Not only can poor indoor air quality adversely impact building occupant’s  health, it can create clinically dangerous conditions.  Learn about the key touch points and how to apply them to your HVAC system.
