MD 15161-2013, Control of Legionella in Mechanical Systems

Speaker: Michael Halpin, BSc., Certified HACCP Manager, Nalco, An Ecolab Company - Environmental Hygiene Services Division

Engineered water systems in public buildings that are contaminated with Legionella present the facility management team with significant public health, image, regulatory and legal risk. Public Works and Government Services Canada have recently issued a new Standard for the Control of Legionella in Mechanical Systems.  The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that there are between 8,000 and 18,000 cases of Legionnaires’ Disease each year and cite a 219% increase in reported cases between 2000 and 2009.  This presentation will look at how the risks can be reduced by implementing strategies such as hazard assessments, cleaning and disinfection procedures, secondary disinfection etc. The benefits of utilizing a proactive rather than a reactive approach will be considered and assessed.
