Fire Code Requirements for the Use of Flammable and Combustible Liquids in Hospitals

Health care facilities often use solvents, cleaners and preserving solutions that are classified as flammable or combustible liquids and regulated by the Fire Code. This session will provide an introduction to liquid classification and the requirements of Part 4, “Flammable Liquids and Combustible Liquids”, of the Fire Code.  The presentation will introduce requirements for the storage, handling and use of liquids in laboratories and storage rooms typically found in health care facilities. Specific emphasis will be placed on applicable requirements in existing facilities that are retroactively regulated by the Fire Code.  The session will emphasize the value of planning for life safety to mitigate the hazard of fires and/or explosions. It will include an opportunity for participants to evaluate various typical building conditions and to discuss Fire Code compliance issues observed
