Donations Finally Exceed Pre-Recession Levels – Canadian Hospitals Raised More Than $1.35 Billion in 2011
October 11, 2012

According to the Association for Health Care Philanthropy’s Skyscraper Ad Goes Here  (AHP) report on Giving-Canada, donor’s to Canada’s health care institutions increased contributions by $151 million in 2011, 12.5 per cent more than in 2010.

Jory Pritchard-Kerr, FAHP, AHP Regional Director for Canada and Executive Director of Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation in Collingwood, Ontario noted, “It has been four long years since Canadian hospitals and health care systems were able to exceed the $1.337 billion raised through philanthropy in 2007. This had been the high-water mark for giving to health care institutions in Canada since the year 2000.”

The improved fundraising in 2011 enabled Canadian hospitals and health care systems to pay for more up-to-date equipment, which accounted for more than 53 cents of every dollar donated. Other important purposes were funding construction and renovation projects (roughly 13.3 per cent), general operations (8.3 per cent) and providing resourced for research and teaching (9.8 per cent).

The FY 2011 report indicates more fundraising success was achieved through major gifts and annual giving, while the portion of funds raised dipped for special events and planned giving.

The AHP Report on Giving is based on a survey of North American health care institutions affiliated with the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, a not-for-profit organization whose members direct philanthropic programs in 2,200 of North America’s nonprofit health care providers.

As in years past, more than eight of every 10 donors were individual givers, who contributed almost six of every 10 dollars raised. Most donors were from the health care institution’s surrounding community, while persons with direct ties to the facility, such as patients, physicians, board members and staff, represented more than 37 per cent of all individual donors.
