Structural Upgrade of Pre-Code Hospital Building to Meet Modern Safety and Operational Standards

Speaker: Jack Guo, PEng, PhD, CBCI, Principal, Kinetica Risk

This presentation introduces the concept, assessment approaches and tools for natural hazard resilience and operational continuity in critical healthcare facilities. The methodology and tools directly address capital investment decision-making needs relating to older hospital buildings that were designed prior to modern building codes, which give them vulnerabilities that may require innovative engineering solutions guided by resilience analysis to address, or are otherwise extremely expensive to remedy through regular engineering practice. An example from Kingston, Ontario is used to illustrate the application of these tools.
