Furey Andrew

 Dr. Andrew Furey

Dr. Andrew Furey is an orthopaedic surgeon, community leader, physician, medical educator and the founder of Team Broken Earth, a national medical aid charity that began in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Since founding Team Broken Earth, Andrew has led over 20 missions to Haiti, Bangladesh and Guatemala with his colleagues from Memorial University and Eastern Health. Team Broken Earth continues to grow nationally and internationally.

Team Broken Earth is a true national movement that began right here!

It now includes teams from 7 Canadian provinces and territories, engaging over hundreds of doctors, nurses and volunteers each year as the organization provides critical aid and medical education to people in need around the world. Dr. Furey was recently awarded the 2017 Humanitarian of the Year Award, also honoured to accept on behalf of Team Broken Earth, the Meritorious Service Cross from
Governor General David Johnson. He is a proud past recipient of the Atlantic Business Magazine Top 50 CEOs Award and is active in the local innovation and business community through his work on the Board of Directors of several private companies.

Andrew is a very proud Newfoundlander, he lives in St. Phillip's with his wife and three children.

 Rideout ArthurA

Dr. Arthur A. Rideout

Arthur Rideout grauated from Memorial University Medical School, and finished a rotating internship at Dalhousie University.  He worked as a Family Doctor in Middle Musquodoboit, NS for a year and then trained in general surgery at Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by a residency in plastic and recontructive surgery at McGill University.  He received his Fellowship in craniomaxillofacial surgery at the University of Toronto and his Fellowship in hand and upper extremity at the State University of New York in Syracuse.  He is Board Certified in Canada and the USA.

Dr. Rideout has been practicing in Newfoundland for 21 years.  He has served on 20 Operation Smile missions to date and 10 + Team Broken Earh missions to date. 

He was a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012 and served on the Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundlan from 2009 to 2015.

Bedard Bob

Bob Bedard

Bob is General Superintendent, Graham Construction, in the Grande Prairie Hospital Project.  He has been in construction for over 45 years.  He started working with his father in his teens and moved up to other types of construction including grain elevators, sewage and water treatment plants and high rises, but enjoys the complexity of hospital construction the most.

He is currently involved in his seventh hospital construction project in Canada - the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.  IPC and IAQ for hospital construction are a passion, and Bob has been a CSA Committee Member for A317 since 2012.

Bringing a different point of view to the committee, Bob helps provide the methods and means of achieving the standards to the table.  Bob strives to share his experience and encourage the entire industry.  There is much more we can do to improve the design and constructability to build safer, cleaner health care facilities in the future.

 Chad Berndt

Chad Berndt is a professional engineer with ten years in the sustainability field. He has worked as a consultant for green buildings, a commissioning agent, and as an energy manager at the University Health Network since 2013. UHN is a major Canadian healthcare organization located in Toronto Ontario; it includes Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Center, Toronto Rehab Institute, and Toronto Western Hospital, as well at the Michener Institute. The combined utility spend is over $30 million a year, for services encompassing over 7 million square feet.

Chad is also a certified energy manager and LEED accredited professional.

Gorden Burrill, P.Eng., CCHFM, FASHE, CHFM, CHC 

Gordon is President of Teegor Consulting Inc., an international consulting firm specializing in healthcare engineering and construction. He spent 13 years as a design engineer, followed by 7 years as the Director of the Engineering for a New Brunswick Health Authority in Canada before branching out to Teegor Consulting Inc. in August of 2004. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with 25 years experience in the design, construction, operations and maintenance of healthcare facilities and is both a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager and a Certified Healthcare Constructor. He is member of the Standing Committee on Building and Plumbing Systems to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Health Care Section, a former Council Member of the International Federation for Hospital Engineers and Past President of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society.

Gordon is currently the vice-chair of the Canadian Standards Association’s Technical Committee for Health Care Facility Engineering and Physical Plant, chair of their Technical Subcommittee for Infection Control during Construction, Renovation or Maintenance of Health Care Facilities and vice-chair of their Technical Subcommittee for Design and Construction of Canadian Healthcare Facilities.

Kate Butler

Kate is Energy Manager with Service New Brunswick’s Health Services division and has been working with the Regional Health Authorities in NB to increase Energy Stewardship since 2013. Through this role, she has overseen and supported the integration of the Energy Management Program, and the creation of the Energy Network for the Horizon Health Network. Kate has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGNB, a LEED® Accredited Professional, and is Secretary for the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society national board.

Jessica Fullerton

As a member of the Infection Prevention and Control team at the University Health Network (UHN), Jessica Fullerton specializes in health care facility design and construction, focusing on design elements to help prevent the spread of infection. Jessica has provided Infection Prevention and Control expertise on a wide range of acute care, rehabilitation, ambulatory care and community health projects. Her passion lies in bridging the gap between health care design/construction/renovation/maintenance work and how this can positively or negatively influence the care and safety of patients. She currently sits as a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Health Care Facilities Technical Committee providing expert content for several standards related to health care design and construction and is the acting chair of the Z317.13 Standard, Infection control during construction, renovation and maintenance of health care facilities.

Nasreddine Guerfala

Nasreddine Guerfala is a professional engineer with eight years of experience in the energy efficiency field in Quebec and Ontario. He has worked as a project manager for a heating control company and as a senior consultant for and energy efficiency consulting company. Since 2016, Nasreddine has been the optimization and energy manager at Enwave Energy Corporation. Enwave is a fully integrated, sustainable energy services provider operating highly efficient thermal energy plants that distribute steam, hot water and chilled water to more than 150 customer buildings downtown Toronto. Since his appointment, Nasreddine helped Enwave realize over 7,000 MWh of electricity savings and over 300,000 m³ of Gas savings. He was awarded by Toronto hydro as the Energy Manager of the Year 2017.

Nasreddine holds an industrial engineering degree from Tunis School of Engineering, a masters in Mechanical Engineering from University of Sherbrooke and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Ryerson University. Nasreddine is also a certified energy manager, a certified measurement and verification Professional and an active member of the association of energy engineers.

Cliff Harvey, MSc(HQ), OAA, FRAIC brings to the industry a rare breadth and depth of experience and expertise in national and international health and design. Cliff’s professional career includes being Senior Architect in the Ontario Government, a Hospital Vice President, and a practising Architect. Cliff’s passion to search for excellence and share his findings leads him to volunteer on a world-scale. Cliff directs and chairs organizations and committees, leads task groups, and advises on educational programs. Cliff is an active board member and an international speaker on health, care, and design. In all his activities, Cliff focuses on creating collaborative and connected platforms for sharing processes and tools, and creating design spaces within organizations to allow them to thrive creatively. The results are great designs – great environments that always strive to create excellence in the health and well-being of everyone and everything.

Jon Huddy is an Emergency Department design specialist and is President of Huddy HealthCare Solutions, an international healthcare analytics and planning consultant. Mr. Huddy has designed over 325 emergency departments and has consulted with hospitals, physicians, architects and builders across Canada, the US, Europe, the Middle East, South America and Australia with a focus on lean operations and high performance solutions. He is an international speaker and has authored two books on emergency department design including Emergency Department Design: A Practical Guide to Planning for the Future published by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Barry Hunt

Barry Hunt is the Chair of CHAIR, the Coalition for Healthcare Acquired Infection Reduction and the President & CEO of Class 1 Inc. Barry received his Honour’s degree in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph and studied Post-Degree Sciences at the University of Waterloo where he continues his research today. Barry has led the design, development and implementation of new products, services and Standards at the intersection of healthcare and infrastructure over the past two decades. Keen Michael

Michael Keen

With over 25 years of experience, Michael Keen is recognized as a leader in healthcare infrastructure and development of the built environment of care. As Executive Director & Chief Planning & Redevelopment Officer at St. Michael’s/St. Joseph’s/Providence Hospitals, he provides corporate leadership for the development and implementation of strategic capital plans. In this capacity, he currently leads a $500 million redevelopment of St. Michael’s Hospital as well as significant renewal of inpatient, outpatient and surgical programs. Included is the expansion of the Hospital’s Emergency Department in its role as a leading trauma centre.
Additionally Michael has been a champion for positive transformational change and continuous quality improvement for over 20 years in healthcare standards. As a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standards Development Council he provides leadership in the role of Chair of the Strategic Steering Committee for Healthcare. Furthermore Michael is also a faculty member in the education of Healthcare Facility Planning & Design and has overseen research projects to inform evidence based decision-making in essence supporting his commitment to system learning.

Internationally, Michael was past chair of the Healthcare Technical Committee at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the inaugural chair of the infectious diseases committee.

Michael Kurz

Michael Kurz is a professional engineer with 10 years of experience in the energy efficiency and renewable energy fields. For the last 5 years, Mike has been with the University Health Network serving as Energy Manager for several hospital sites in Toronto. Major projects Mike has worked on at UHN include lighting retrofits, boiler/chiller replacements, building automation modifications and upgrades, water efficiency upgrades, demand controlled HVAC, and more. Over the last five years, UHN’s Energy and Environment team has developed projects leading to approximately $14M in cumulative utility cost savings.

He holds diplomas in Network Engineering and Business.

Patrick Leach

Patrick Leach is as an authority on the role of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) in Healthcare and Bio‐defense. He has been involved in the design and implementation of clinical studies demonstrating the reduction of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs) through application of Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation in Hospital HVAC systems. These published studies include Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, New York and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.

Mr. Leach has functioned as an invited consultant with government agencies including The White House Office of Science and Technology, the GSA and Department of Homeland Security. He has designed and overseen microbial exposure testing in collaboration with the State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, School of Medicine. The resulting study demonstrated the efficacy on
pathogens associated with HAIs through exposure to desiccant solutions.

He is a member of ASHE, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, CHES, the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society and APIC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

David LeBlanc, P. Eng, is a Project Manager with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, where he manages Provincially funded capital construction projects. Prior to NSDTIR, David worked for Department of Health and Wellness, where he completed several complex healthcare projects, and several years as a PM in private industry for various construction firms. David is a Professional Engineer and a member of Engineers Nova Scotia, has completed a Masters Certificate in Project Management, as well as numerous training and conference professional development certificates. David has been an avid learner and steward of best practices for infection control in healthcare design, and implementation of infection control practices in construction and renovation. While at NSDHW, David led internal project teams developing documents focused on infrastructure supporting good infection control practices, and design guidelines for construction of healthcare spaces supporting infection control and patient safety best practices. 

 

Martin Mielke

Based in Kitchener Ontario, Martin Mielke is a graduate of Queen's University and Fleming College. He has over 15 years of experience providing consulting services in the fields of Construction-related infection control, Asbestos, Mould and Designated Substance at hospitals across Southern Ontario including Kitchener/Waterloo, Mississauga, London and Toronto Ontario. Martin has been an active team member in over six hospital Capital Redevelopment Projects and provides professional consulting services to hospitals on a weekly basis.

Jerald Peters is the Principal-in-Charge at ft3 Architecture Landscape Interior Design in Winnipeg, MB. With a Master of Architecture from the University of Manitoba, he has over two decades of experience as a healthcare architect. His particular experience encompasses Emergency Department design, acute care, geriatric care, and hospital functionality and efficiencies. His passion for healthcare design began with his graduate thesis on personal care homes which has continued ever since. As Principal-in-Charge at ft3, he has led his team on significant projects such as a new Emergency Department for the Grace General Hospital, the Brian Sinclair Inquest Emergency Department Feasibility Study, and several innovative Personal Care Homes currently in the works. Jerald is a LEED accredited professional, holds a license to practice in five provinces, and is a Member of the College of Fellows, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Mark Piegay is the Global Sales Engineer at Alfa Laval Kathabar Inc. Mr. Piegay received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from The State University of New York at Buffalo. He began his career at Kathabar as an Applications Engineer in 2010 and moved to the role of Northeast Regional Sales Manager in 2013. In 2018 he began his new role as Global Sales Engineer, working on projects globally and assisting sales teams with key projects. Mark is based in Buffalo, NY and is very active with ASHRAE. He has presented in recent years on the application of desiccant dehumidification and more recently on applying desiccant dehumidification systems for surgical suites. He is also a member on the Desiccant Technical Committee and the Air to Air Energy Recovery Technical Committee.

Susan Rhodenizer Rose 

Suzanne is the Provincial Director of Medical Device Reprocessing at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. Prior to transitioning to the health authority, she held various roles at the Nova Scotia Department of Health & Wellness (DHW), including, Interim Executive Director, Health System Quality and Director, Health System Quality and Infection Prevention and Control Nova Scotia and provincial infection control consultant. Before joining DHW, she held infection control and nursing leadership roles with South Shore Health. She has published articles on infection prevention and control in multiple publications and has contributed at various national and international infection control symposiums. She is a sitting Past President for IPAC Canada and leads national work with this organization in the development of a national surveillance system for healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistant organisms. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University and a Master of Health Studies from Athabasca University.

Taylor Stephanie 

Dr. Stephanie Taylor

Dr. Stephanie Taylor is the CEO of Taylor Healthcare Commissioning, Inc. After working as a physician for many decades, Dr. Taylor obtained a Masters in Architecture as well as Infection Control certification. Her lifelong commitment to patient care includes focusing on improving the healthcare physical environment and clinical work processes to help patients heal quickly and save hospitals valuable dollars. Dr. Taylor is a graduate of Harvard Medical School (MD), and Norwich University (Masters Architecture). She has numerous research publications in "Nature", "Science", and other peer-reviewed journals.
